Troops from Operation Hadin Kai successfully repelled an insurgent infiltration attempt in Cross Kauwa, Borno State, on July 12, 2026. The military confirmed the death of Abu Salim al-Barnawi, a high-ranking ISWAP figure known for managing the terrorist group’s propaganda and photography efforts. Acting Military Information Officer Captain Mohammed Goni reported that two other media unit members, Abu Umar Khattab and Abu Khalid Usman, were also killed during the engagement.
Intelligence reports highlight that al-Barnawi was formerly involved in cross-border raids into Cameroon prior to transitioning into his role as a key producer of extremist media and recruitment materials. The military recovered video equipment from the site, and the insurgent group has since verified his death through a published obituary.
The confrontation resulted in significant losses for the militants, including the death of commander Aliyu Zabarmari and an unidentified Syrian fighter. Captain Goni emphasized that these tactical successes severely undermine the group’s ability to maintain their command structure and disseminate propaganda. The military remains focused on dismantling these networks to restore security in the North-East region.
