Former Southern Water CEO faces fraud charges regarding water testing

Former Southern Water CEO Matthew Wright faces fraud charges after judges rejected his legal bid to stop a prosecution regarding manipulated water quality tests.

Matthew Wright, the former chief executive of Southern Water, is facing charges for conspiracy to defraud. He is accused of participating in a scheme to falsify water quality test results, allegedly to bypass significant financial penalties from regulators. Wright is named alongside Philip Barker, Clive Massey, and Mark Gregory in the legal action brought by the Environment Agency and Ofwat.

Although the Environment Agency moved to issue summonses against these individuals last year, Wright initiated a legal challenge in an attempt to block the proceedings. His legal team argued before the High Court that the Environment Agency lacked the necessary authority to issue these summonses. However, two senior judges rejected this claim on Wednesday and ordered that previous reporting restrictions on the case be lifted.

Court records indicate that the case involving 60-year-old Wright and his co-defendants—Barker, 57, Massey, 64, and Gregory, 63—was scheduled for a hearing at Medway Magistrates’ Court on 14 July.
