President Donald Trump has finalized a significant 30-year nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia. This deal is designed to assist the kingdom in developing a civilian nuclear infrastructure, according to government sources cited by the Wall Street Journal.
Under the terms of the multibillion-dollar contract, U.S. firms are slated to construct nuclear facilities, effectively sidelining international competitors. A notable component of the pact involves the potential development of a domestic uranium enrichment site, contingent upon the results of a joint U.S.-Saudi feasibility analysis. The Trump administration views this cooperation as a means to maintain oversight of the kingdom’s nuclear activities and prevent the transition toward military applications.
The proposal will soon undergo congressional review, where it is anticipated to encounter significant pushback from lawmakers wary of nuclear proliferation within the Middle East. Furthermore, the New York Times reports that the administration accepted certain limitations, including potential restrictions on international inspector access to sensitive facilities where nuclear fuel diversion might be a concern.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright initiated discussions regarding this project during an April 2025 regional tour. While these negotiations are separate from previous efforts to normalize Saudi-Israeli relations, which halted following the 2023 Gaza conflict, they reflect Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s persistent desire to establish a civilian nuclear program. The Prince previously indicated that Riyadh would seek nuclear parity should their regional rival, Iran, obtain such capabilities.
