A boat carrying more than 50 passengers sank within Cameroonian territorial waters, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 Nigerians. The vessel departed from Garwa with a final destination of Dasin, located in the Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Reports indicate the boat was dangerously overloaded with iron rods and various construction supplies. Local residents noted that the operators disregarded warnings to delay their departure until the following morning, choosing instead to set sail late Monday night. During the journey, the boat encountered a midnight storm and capsized, leading to a death toll estimated to exceed 30 people.
So far, 18 bodies have been retrieved and buried in Wuro Boki. Search teams consisting of divers from both Nigeria and Cameroon are continuing to look for additional victims, while survivors are currently receiving medical attention in border hospitals. When contacted, the Adamawa State Police Marine unit stated that the accident occurred outside of Nigerian territory.
