Anthony Taylor, a prominent English match official, has officially retired after a twenty-year career. His final professional duty was the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match between Portugal and Spain.
Throughout his sixteen-year tenure in the Premier League, Taylor oversaw 432 matches, contributing to a total of 668 professional games. His domestic achievements include officiating numerous major finals, such as the FA Cup, League Cup, and the Championship play-off final. Internationally, he spent 14 years on the FIFA list, working at two World Cups, two European Championships, and two Club World Cups.
Taylor noted that while he felt privileged to officiate at such a high level, the persistent scrutiny made it the correct moment to retire. He expressed appreciation for his colleagues, specifically Gary and Adam, and thanked his family for their sacrifices.
Howard Webb, the PGMOL Chief Refereeing Officer, commended Taylor as one of the most successful officials in English history. Webb praised not only Taylor’s performance in major fixtures but also his dedication and mentorship of younger referees.
