Reports indicate that a French military plane also observed the frigate, establishing radio communication to inquire about its objectives. Before commencing the gunnery maneuvers, the Russian crew notified the Royal Navy patrol vessel HMS Tyne of their plans. Following a request from the Russian ship to move to a greater distance, HMS Tyne complied. The exercise occurred in international waters and spanned roughly half an hour.
This occurrence highlights the recent rise in Russian naval operations in proximity to the United Kingdom. Although questions persist regarding whether such maneuvers are timed to challenge the new government under Prime Minister Andy Burnham, defense officials have remained silent on the matter.
