A federal judge in the United States has issued a temporary injunction stopping the $110 billion merger between media corporations Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery. The move follows a legal challenge from 12 states, including New York and California, which claim the agreement would harm market competition and increase costs for viewers.
Prosecutors argued that uniting these major film studios would negatively impact movie theaters and cable distributors. While the companies contended that the merger would enhance streaming operations, US District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín decided that the public interest in antitrust oversight takes priority. The 14-day restraining order prevents the firms from integrating their operations, with the judge noting that undoing the merger later would be exceptionally complex.
The two companies will remain independent entities while the court reviews the case. This potential consolidation involves iconic franchises such as Batman, Harry Potter, and Mission: Impossible. A combined entity would control more than 25 percent of major motion picture releases. Further court hearings are scheduled for August.
