The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally requested that the Federal Government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) provide a detailed explanation for the N7.13 trillion labeled as energy security spending in their 2024 financial audit. The party argues that citizens must understand the tangible impact of these massive public expenditures during a period of significant economic distress.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, issued a statement urging President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of the NNPC to release a comprehensive breakdown of these funds. The ADC specifically wants to see data on payments made, the identity of beneficiaries, and evidence of value-for-money assessments.
The opposition party expressed concern regarding Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, whose firm holds a major pipeline security contract. Because Ekpemupolo is actively involved in President Tinubu’s political campaigns, the ADC contends that the government must prove these funds are being utilized exclusively for infrastructure protection rather than partisan activities.
Highlighting a staggering 14,800 percent increase from previous surveillance contract costs, the ADC noted that when broader fuel-related receivables are included, the total reaches approximately N17.5 trillion. The party insisted that such immense spending requires rigorous public oversight. Ultimately, the ADC is calling on the National Assembly and the executive branch to justify this investment by explaining how it has improved the lives of Nigerians or strengthened the nation’s economy.
