Proceedings in the financial misconduct case against former Social Democratic Party officials have been rescheduled for August 17, 2026, after the court failed to convene. Party National Chairman Professor Sadiq Abubakar Gombe stated that the session was postponed due to unexpected circumstances, forcing all involved parties to select a new date.
Gombe expressed optimism regarding the prosecution’s case, asserting that they have gathered significant proof to support charges of misappropriation and criminal breach of trust. He highlighted that officials from Zenith Bank were present at the court with essential documentation, including the party’s bank statements, but were unable to submit them due to the cancellation.
The chairman revealed that an internal audit of 2024 records uncovered suspicious activity, including 75 irregular payments made to an unauthorized individual within a single year. Gombe emphasized that the party’s current administration is dedicated to financial transparency and urged the judiciary to expedite the trial to bolster democratic stability before the 2027 elections.
Addressing internal party matters, Gombe reiterated that the National Executive Committee properly expelled former chairman Shehu Musa Gabam. He maintained that these administrative decisions were monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission and align with the Electoral Act, emphasizing the party’s focus on future electoral success.
