The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the Constitution has officially started a detailed examination of the updated State Police Service Bill submitted by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu shared this update during a committee session in Abuja this past Monday. He noted that the legislation remains largely consistent with previous drafts, though it contains minor adjustments designed to simplify the establishment and function of state-level law enforcement.
Kalu emphasized the collaborative effort between the House and the Senate to finalize these constitutional changes. The committee’s primary objective is to evaluate the executive proposal and provide necessary recommendations back to the floor. While the Senate has already approved the bill, the House aims to harmonize its version with the Senate’s updates.
A notable addition is Section 318, which addresses transitional procedures and interpretations necessary for activating the state police structure. Kalu urged committee members to align with the eight minor textual modifications suggested by the Senate to ensure a streamlined legislative path.
