Aston Villa secures Joao Gomes from Wolves for 38 million pounds

Aston Villa has finalized a 38 million pound deal for Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes, bringing him in from Wolves as part of a summer squad reshuffle.

Aston Villa completed the acquisition of Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves this Monday for a fee reaching 38 million pounds. The club pursued Gomes as a replacement following Chelsea’s agreement to purchase Morgan Rogers from Unai Emery’s squad.

Although Atletico Madrid expressed interest in the 25-year-old international, who has 10 caps for Brazil, Villa successfully persuaded him to leave the Championship side. Gomes participated in 130 matches for Wolves after arriving from Flamengo in 2023, though he could not prevent the team’s relegation from the top flight.

His transfer is a component of a significant team restructuring. The departure of Rogers is expected to conclude in a record-breaking 117 million pound deal for an English athlete. Previously this month, Villa offloaded Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, while Amadou Onana remains sidelined until the following year due to a knee injury. Earlier on Friday, Emery secured Swiss winger Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for a club-record 50 million pounds. Matt Jackson, the technical director for Wolves, praised Gomes as a dedicated professional destined for future success.
