Infantino attempted to guide the president away from the stage, but Trump lingered briefly while the Spanish players hoisted the trophy. The 80-year-old leader even performed a brief iteration of his signature dance moves for the team. Having arrived at the New York-New Jersey venue via Marine One, Trump watched the match beside First Lady Melania Trump and the FIFA head.
Prior to the game, Trump mentioned his connection with Argentine President Javier Milei and expressed belief that Lionel Messi would lead Argentina to a win. However, following Spain’s victory, he remarked that Spain simply performed better. The event also served as a diplomatic venue, with Trump discussing wildfire concerns with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and dismissing reports of tension with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
This appearance marked the first World Cup game the president has attended. The president, who has frequently engaged with FIFA throughout the tournament, previously sparked controversy by asking Infantino to overturn a red card for U.S. player Folarin Balogun.
