Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress presidential candidate, has accused President Bola Tinubu of orchestrating his incarceration. In a July 18, 2026, social media post, Sowore discussed his own experience and criticized the severe bail requirements trapping numerous inmates at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.
Sowore drew attention to the case of Haruna Garba Gololo, a man allegedly imprisoned due to a conflict with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Despite securing bail, Gololo remained behind bars for nearly three weeks, unable to satisfy the court-ordered release terms. Similarly, Sowore highlighted the ordeal of David Nwokorie, who was detained following a disagreement involving the daughter of retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Hilary Opara. Justice Rita Ajumogobia ordered Nwokorie’s release after four months of custody, but the bail terms demanded a Level 16 civil servant and a serving Army colonel, conditions Sowore termed nearly impossible to fulfill.
Furthermore, the activist alleged that Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo pursued a cyberstalking case against Emorioloye Owolemi, leading to months of imprisonment for the defendant. Regarding his own past detention, Sowore explicitly blamed President Tinubu. Current data from the Kuje facility indicates that 817 of the 1,115 inmates are awaiting trial, with 47 suffering from tuberculosis. As of the time of reporting, the Presidency, Senate President Akpabio, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Minister of Interior have not provided a response to these accusations.
