Owerri Residents Decry Severe Flooding in Federal Housing Estate

Residents of Umuguma Federal Housing Estate in Owerri are calling on the Imo State government for urgent intervention as heavy floods submerge homes and disrupt local businesses.

People living in the Umuguma Federal Housing Estate of Owerri West, Imo State, are calling on the government for urgent help as persistent flooding threatens their homes and livelihoods. Recent heavy rainfall over two days left many houses underwater and turned local roads into impassable channels, halting business activities.

Resident Chiamaka Enyinnaya described the scene as commuters struggle to traverse flooded paths. She noted that this seasonal flooding has become a chronic issue that disrupts daily life. Shop owner Anayo Ikechi highlighted that aging infrastructure and poor drainage are the primary culprits, noting that the situation has deteriorated significantly over time despite previous pleas for intervention.

The impact extends to the local transport sector. Commercial motorcycle operator Ebuka explained that many riders now refuse to enter the estate because the water causes frequent mechanical damage to their vehicles. Consequently, those who do operate in the area charge higher fares to account for the risk and repair costs.

Engineer Bethel, a resident of five years, expressed frustration that no meaningful improvements have been made to the estate. He emphasized the irony of a Federal Housing Estate located near the Government House suffering from such severe infrastructural neglect, and he expressed a desperate hope for immediate government action to resolve these recurring challenges.
