Prominent human rights attorney Femi Falana has declared his intention to sue the Nigerian federal government regarding its recent distribution of luxury residences to judges in the Katampe district of Abuja. Falana argued that this policy violates constitutional mandates regarding equality, labeling the special treatment as both discriminatory and lacking a solid legal foundation.
In a recent public statement, Falana emphasized that while he supports the need for judicial officers to live in secure and comfortable environments, singling out one group for such benefits while ignoring the needs of other public servants is unjust. He pointed to university professors as a primary example of public professionals who suffer from poor compensation and a lack of institutional housing support.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria further criticized the common practice of former governors maintaining multiple state-funded benefits after moving into legislative roles. He stated that the government must adhere to the principle that all citizens should be treated equally under the law. Falana concluded by warning that he intends to initiate legal action to ensure government policies align with these equitable standards, noting that fairness must apply to all sectors of the public workforce.
