SEC Launches Nationwide Initiative to Retrieve Unclaimed Dividends

The SEC has started a nationwide campaign to help Nigerians recover unclaimed dividends and capital market funds, beginning with an educational town hall in Lagos.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched a countrywide awareness program to assist Nigerians in reclaiming dividends and other capital market funds that remain unclaimed. This initiative debuted with a town hall gathering in Lagos, focusing on educating investors about the National Investor Protection Fund (NIPF) and the steps required to verify and reclaim these assets.

Representing the SEC Director-General Emomotimi Agama, the Director of Registration and Exchanges, Hafsat Rufai, emphasized that the goal is to reunite investors with their capital. These unclaimed assets often stem from public offerings, corporate mergers, acquisitions, and restructuring activities.

Agama stressed that the SEC finds it unacceptable for these funds to sit idle, noting that many individuals are simply unaware of their eligibility or the recovery process. The campaign will move beyond Lagos to reach all six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory, ensuring widespread public engagement on the matter.
