Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy revealed that he had to borrow money during his legal struggles.

The France international faced accusations of rape and sexual assault while playing for City and was suspended without pay as he navigated his legal battles.

In his witness statement while suing Manchester City for reimbursement of his wages after being acquitted of all charges, the defender, now with Lorient in France, expressed gratitude to Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and Riyad Mahrez for assisting him financially to cover his legal expenses and support his family.

“Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez all lent me money to help me try and pay my legal fees and support my family,” Mendy, now with Lorient, said in his witness statement.

Mendy stated that he turned down all efforts by Manchester City to terminate his contract because he “wanted to go back and train with his team.”

In his witness statement, he added: “I believe that it is fair and just for me to be paid the wages that I would have earned but for being falsely arrested for crimes that I did not commit.
