Mary Habila burial delayed as police demand autopsy

The family of Mary Habila has postponed her funeral indefinitely, citing police requirements for an autopsy as the investigation into her death continues.

The relatives of Mary Habila, a 26-year-old nurse formerly stationed at the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences and seconded to the Federal Ministry of Works, have officially delayed her funeral indefinitely. This change occurs while the Ebonyi State Police Command continues to mandate a post-mortem examination before releasing her remains.

Elisha Haruna, speaking for the family, confirmed that the service originally planned for Friday, July 17, is canceled. The family cited unexpected developments as the primary cause for this shift, expressing regret for the disruption and requesting patience from those planning to attend. They promised to share an updated schedule once new arrangements are finalized.

The family also acknowledged the widespread support and prayers offered during this period of grief. This delay arises amid a broader controversy regarding the circumstances of Habila’s passing, which took place at the home of Minister of Works, David Umahi. Despite initial resistance from the family, local police authorities maintain that an autopsy is mandatory to determine the precise cause of death.
