Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, has officially ruled out terrorism or criminal activity regarding the explosion that struck Mushin on June 22, 2026. The police investigation concluded that the incident at 19 Way Street was the result of a mechanical failure rather than an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
Specialists from the Nigeria Police Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit conducted an exhaustive review of the scene. Their findings showed no evidence of detonators, explosive residue, or blast patterns typically seen in intentional attacks. Furthermore, the damage to the vehicle did not match the structural destruction caused by explosives.
Instead, experts determined that a pressurized mechanical component outside the vehicle suffered a catastrophic failure. This sudden energy release shattered the passenger-side window and caused minor injuries to the occupant. CP Fatai has officially reclassified the case as a mechanical explosion, emphasizing that there is no threat to public safety. He urged residents to remain calm, thanked the public for their swift reporting, and reaffirmed the police command’s commitment to transparent and scientific investigation procedures.
