On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate officially approved Professor Abayomi Fasina from Lagos as a non-career ambassador. This decision followed a presentation by Senator Simon Lalong on behalf of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, which is led by Senator Sani Bello.
Although the appointment faced some internal resistance, it received backing from key figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Abdul Ningi. Notably, Senator Cyril Fasuyi expressed opposition despite previously signing in support of the nomination. To address concerns, the committee cited findings from the University Governing Council and the Nigeria Police, both of which cleared Fasina of prior allegations. Senate President Akpabio emphasized that the confirmation process relied on official documentation from state security services and academic authorities rather than rumors.
This confirmation proceeded despite public demonstrations by a civil society coalition on July 7, 2026. The group, represented by lawyer Amira Adeyemo, argued that pending legal matters in the National Industrial Court involving claims of sexual harassment and human rights abuses should be resolved before the Senate takes action. The coalition stated their efforts were intended to uphold judicial integrity and workplace accountability.
