A formal investigation conducted by Sir John Goldring has concluded that MI5 deliberately provided false evidence to three separate courts. The security service attempted to shield a violent neo-Nazi operative, referred to as Agent X, by maintaining a policy of neither confirming nor denying his status as an informant, even after that policy had already been compromised. The report indicates that internal deception was systemic, with high-ranking officers knowingly misleading both their colleagues and the judiciary.
Agent X, who maintained a relationship with a woman while working for the service, was accused of using his position to exert coercive control and committing a machete attack. Despite the seriousness of these allegations, MI5 leadership prioritized protecting their operational secrecy. Sir John’s report highlights that one senior officer, designated as Officer 2, consistently lied about conversations he held with a BBC journalist, while another officer, Officer 3, misrepresented internal warnings and obstructed the truth.
MI5 Director General Sir Ken McCallum has expressed profound regret, apologizing for the organization’s serious failures and the delay in addressing the misconduct. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the findings as stark, confirming that the government is now pursuing urgent oversight measures to ensure accountability. Given the gravity of the situation, the High Court may now consider contempt of court proceedings or criminal charges against those responsible for the fabricated testimony.
