Red Bull Abandons Rear Wing Design Following Verstappen Incidents

Red Bull is switching back to a traditional rear wing for the Belgian Grand Prix after identifying a dangerous aerodynamic flaw that led to recent crashes for Max Verstappen.

Red Bull has decided to return to a standard rear wing configuration for the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix. This change follows two high-speed accidents involving Max Verstappen during recent events. Team principal Laurent Mekies confirmed the adjustment to BBC Sport, noting that post-race testing after Silverstone revealed technical flaws.

Previously, Red Bull and Ferrari utilized an innovative design where the rear wing flap rotated beyond 180 degrees to boost straight-line speed. However, investigations suggest this mechanism caused aerodynamic instability when transitioning back to cornering mode. Verstappen, who labeled the situation as extremely hazardous, experienced sudden losses of rear downforce leading to his spins.

The team opted to revert to a conventional wing that functions in a traditional manner to ensure stability. This strategic pivot follows a recent filming day evaluation conducted at Silverstone, which helped the team identify the airflow reattachment issue responsible for the unexpected loss of grip.
