Military apprehends alleged foreign operative in Borno following thwarted attack

Operation HADIN KAI troops have detained a man identified as a Nigerien national suspected of espionage in Borno State following a recent failed terrorist infiltration.

Soldiers from Operation HADIN KAI captured a suspected foreign spy in the Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State. This action occurred during a routine security sweep, shortly after forces stopped a terrorist unit from breaching a military location.

Security expert Zagazola Makama reported on X that the 68 Battalion conducted the arrest in Mallam Fatori on July 13. The operation was part of a larger security initiative prompted by a failed militant raid on the 19 Brigade camp at Cross Kauwa on July 11.

The individual was identified as Abubakar Mohammed Zen, who stated he is a national of the Republic of Niger and arrived from Duguri. Authorities confiscated a mobile phone, phone credit, a horse, and a small amount of cash from the man.

Military personnel are currently holding Zen for questioning. They aim to confirm his background and investigate any potential connections to extremist cells throughout the Lake Chad basin. This apprehension is one component of broader efforts by Operation HADIN KAI to root out informants and logistical supporters in the region.
