The Allied People’s Movement (APM) recently suggested that the All Progressives Congress (APC) must address allegations regarding its reported links to criminal gangs. This critique stems from the APC’s strong disapproval of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s request for a United Nations-led investigation into the recent kidnapping of students and educators.
According to Abubakar Yusuf, the APM’s National Publicity Secretary, the intense pushback from APC figures like Senator George Akume and Senator Adams Oshiomhole against the governor’s appeal for transparency raises significant questions. Yusuf argued that instead of criticizing the call for an impartial probe, these leaders should support efforts to uncover the truth behind the security crisis.
The APM recalled past claims that APC leadership allegedly utilized foreign mercenaries during the 2015 elections, hinting that this history explains their defensive posture. The party dismissed claims that seeking UN assistance undermines Nigerian sovereignty. They pointed out that President Bola Tinubu himself has frequently solicited international aid, such as his engagements with the FBI in 2024, to combat national security threats.
Governor Makinde has maintained that the severity of the Oyo incident justifies independent oversight to ensure full accountability and restore public trust. The APM echoed this sentiment, asserting that those who fear such an investigation likely have something to hide. While pressing for transparency, the party also expressed gratitude toward Nigerian security forces for their successful efforts in rescuing the hostages.
