Woman convicted of murdering five-year-old son seeks case review

Angharad Williamson, serving a life sentence for the murder of her son Logan Mwangi, is attempting to have her conviction reviewed by an external investigator.

Angharad Williamson, who is currently serving a life sentence for the 2021 murder of her five-year-old son, Logan Mwangi, is seeking to have her conviction examined for potential errors. Alongside Logan’s stepfather, John Cole, and a teenager named Craig Mulligan, Williamson was sentenced in 2022. She is required to serve at least 28 years behind bars.

During a recent preliminary hearing at Pontypridd Coroner’s Court, Tony Thompson, a former police superintendent, confirmed he is reviewing the case at no cost to Williamson, who lacks legal aid. He aims to establish if there are sufficient grounds to approach the Criminal Cases Review Commission, a process he notes is in the early stages.

Logan’s body was discovered in the River Ogmore in Bridgend shortly after his death. The upcoming inquest, scheduled for November, will examine events dating back to August 2020, when the boy was hospitalized with injuries that went unreported to child protection services. While Williamson appeared via video link to observe the proceedings, she made no statement. Thompson acknowledged the sensitivity of the case but stated he is investigating the circumstances surrounding the conviction after being approached by Williamson late last year.
