Multiple flights were forced to divert from Gatwick Airport after a British Airways aircraft obstructed the runway due to a suspected landing gear malfunction. Emergency crews met the plane upon its safe arrival, and all passengers left the aircraft without incident.
A spokesperson for London Gatwick confirmed the brief closure of the runway, noting that while some flights were redirected, most resumed their arrival at the airport shortly after. Safety protocols remained the primary focus during the event.
The incident caused particular distress for passengers on an EasyJet flight traveling from Rome to Gatwick, which was diverted to Stansted Airport. Due to a lack of available ground handling support at Stansted, the plane could not be refueled, leaving passengers stranded on the tarmac for over two hours. EasyJet issued an apology, confirming that passengers eventually disembarked and were instructed to manage their own onward travel for later reimbursement.
Under UK law, passengers facing such disruptions may be eligible for compensation if the issue is deemed the airline’s responsibility. Entitlements vary based on the duration of the flight and the amount of notice provided regarding changes to travel plans, ranging from £220 for shorter journeys to £520 for long-haul routes.
