Crews fighting the massive moorland blazes in Greater Manchester anticipate the operation will continue for several days. The fires, which began on Saturday, have combined across sites near the Dove Stone Reservoir in Saddleworth and Tintwistle Moor near Glossop.
Clive Stanbrook from the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service noted that shifting winds and extremely dry conditions are fueling the flames. Emergency personnel are utilizing helicopters, drones, and aircraft to monitor the situation and distribute water. Approximately 70 firefighters, supported by 11 engines and four wildfire units, are currently on-site managing the difficult, unstable terrain.
Ben Levy, an area manager for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, emphasized that high temperatures and a lack of rain are hindering suppression efforts. While water drops are part of the strategy, specialist teams are also on the ground working in challenging physical conditions. Local support has been strong, with Micklehurst Cricket Club providing supplies to the weary crews.
Legal action is underway regarding the origin of the fires. Shania Care-Slede, 20, of Hyde, has appeared in Manchester Magistrates’ Court. She faces charges of aggravated arson, reckless endangerment of life, and dangerous driving. The defendant has been remanded in custody until her next court date on August 18.
