Spanish officials have confirmed that seven British nationals are among the 13 individuals who perished during recent wildfires in the Almería province. Following the conclusion of post-mortem examinations on Tuesday, it was determined that 12 of the deceased were foreigners, including citizens from Belgium, France, the United States, and the United Kingdom. One Spanish national was also among the victims, who consisted of eight women and five men.
The devastating blazes, which broke out last Thursday, scorched approximately 7,000 hectares of land before being brought under control. The village of Bédar was particularly affected by the disaster. Among the British victims were Pete and Fran Gillam, a local couple whose passing was verified by their daughter, Danielle Gillam-Kirton.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office stated it is currently assisting the families of those impacted and maintaining communication with Spanish authorities. Spain has faced an increasing frequency of intense heatwaves, with temperatures frequently climbing past 40C.
