Former England international Troy Deeney believes Thomas Tuchel’s squad is capable of overcoming Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinals. He expects a 2-0 victory for the Three Lions, even though both teams have displayed flaws throughout the competition.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Deeney compared England’s current progression to Arsenal’s Champions League campaigns. He argued that fans often ignore tactical errors because the team keeps securing results, though he warns that higher-level opponents eventually expose these weaknesses. Regarding the upcoming clash, Deeney described it as potentially underwhelming due to the inconsistent performances of both squads.
Deeney noted, “One team may lift their game. I am suggesting that this is perhaps the weakest side of the draw, but it could also be advantageous for us.” He highlighted that while Argentina has championship experience and tactical intelligence, they currently struggle with defensive organization and midfield control. He further emphasized that their heavy reliance on Lionel Messi creates a vulnerable pressure point for the team. This upcoming match will be the first time England and Argentina have met since Messi’s international debut in 2005.
