BPP Introduces Strict Food Procurement Standards and Warns Against Poor Quality Supplies

The Bureau of Public Procurement has rolled out new national guidelines to standardize food quality for public institutions, promising strict legal action against suppliers who provide substandard items.

The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) has introduced official National Guidelines for Public Food Procurement and Related Services. These rules apply to public facilities such as hospitals, correctional centers, and schools. Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, Director-General of the BPP, officially presented these regulations in Abuja on Monday, emphasizing that any vendor providing low-quality food will encounter severe penalties.

Dr. Adedokun stated that these guidelines represent a key advancement in procurement reforms, focusing on maximizing value for money while prioritizing public health, food safety, and nutrition. The policy is also intended to boost Small and Medium Enterprises and encourage more female participation in the food supply sector by establishing clear, accessible standards.

By collaborating with various government agencies, the BPP aims to eliminate the historical lack of oversight in institutional food sourcing. Suppliers are now required to adhere to specific eligibility criteria, ensuring that meals provided in schools and prisons are safe and nutritious. The agency remains committed to enforcing these rules, with legal repercussions awaiting those who supply unsafe products.

Government officials, including Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Salako, support this initiative as a move to improve national health outcomes. Dr. Kingsley Akinroye of the Nigerian Heart Foundation also praised the policy, noting that it will help combat non-communicable diseases by ensuring that food services in public institutions follow evidence-based nutritional standards.
