Amnesty International calls for inquiry into fatal Benue State assault

Amnesty International has requested a formal investigation into the July 12, 2026, attack in Benue State that claimed at least 10 lives and caused widespread displacement.

Amnesty International is urging Nigerian officials to launch a thorough and neutral inquiry into the lethal assault on the Otukpo Nobi and Akpachi-Ugboju regions of Benue State, which resulted in at least 10 deaths on July 12, 2026.

This violent event has sparked significant anxiety throughout the Otukpo Local Government Area. The organization emphasized that the government is obligated to protect its citizens and their assets. Recent youth-led demonstrations in response to the tragedy highlight increasing public anger regarding ongoing abductions and violence within the region.

Demonstrators displayed their desperation by transporting the remains of victims to the Och’Idoma Palace, signaling a clear demand for an immediate cessation of the violence. Reports from families suggest that many individuals are still missing, and numerous others suffered critical injuries during the incident.

The human rights group warned that consistent aggression against rural areas has led to a rise in displaced populations and new burial sites. They are calling for immediate government intervention to support the roughly 500,000 people displaced by regional gunmen, many of whom are currently residing in inadequate shelters lacking basic food, sanitation, and medical supplies. Furthermore, Amnesty International insisted that the government must ensure those responsible for these crimes face justice.
