Akeem Busari Discusses Flamingos’ Success Against Benin

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s football team, the Flamingos, qualified for the 2026 World Cup after defeating Benin 8-5 on aggregate, with coach Akeem Busari crediting a tactical shift in marking for the win.

Following the Flamingos’ successful qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, head coach Akeem Busari shared his thoughts on the victory. According to DAILY POST, Nigeria secured a 5-3 win over the Young Amazons during the second leg of the final qualifying round held at the Stade de Kegue in Lome this past Saturday.

With a 3-2 home victory in the previous week, the team finished with an 8-5 aggregate score. Busari admitted that the Young Amazons proved to be a formidable challenger throughout the series. He noted that although his team benefited from opponent errors, the Young Amazons displayed significant character and skill. Ultimately, Busari attributed the win to Nigeria’s decision to shift from zonal marking to an aggressive man-marking strategy, which effectively countered the opposition’s approach.
