President Tinubu Promises New Investment in West African Horse Racing

President Bola Tinubu has announced a government-led effort to revitalize horse racing in Nigeria as a strategy to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and preserve cultural traditions.

President Bola Tinubu has pledged that the Nigerian government will prioritize the growth of traditional sports, with a specific focus on horse racing. He stated that this initiative is designed to generate employment for young people, foster national unity, and drive economic expansion. Represented by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani at the Renewed Hope West African Horse Racing Derby, the President emphasized that revitalizing this sport will boost tourism, livestock development, and private investment.

Addressing the crowd at Murtala Square in Kaduna, Tinubu noted that the newly formed National Sports Commission is intended to transform sports into a profitable industry. He highlighted plans for a Sports Infrastructure Development Bank to manage the construction and upkeep of facilities, including upgrades to the Ahmadu Bello Stadium and the Zaria Horse Racing and Polo Club. Furthermore, he noted that new anti-doping regulations have been established to align Nigerian sports with international standards.

Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Life President of the Horse Racing Federation of Nigeria, expressed appreciation for the government’s support. The event, which drew participants and dignitaries from across West Africa, concluded with several notable victories, including wins by Bamba Bamba, Speedy Stable, and Ramadan in high-profile cup races.
