From Gatekeeper to Master: Nigeria’s Violent Social Reversal

Nigeria is experiencing a profound and violent social shift, as marginalized groups turn the power dynamics against the political elite who once held absolute control.

As John F. Kennedy once noted, preventing peaceful reform makes violent upheaval inevitable. Nigeria is currently witnessing such a transformation, though many members of the political elite fail to grasp its scope. This shift is driven by countless anonymous individuals who are fundamentally altering the nation’s trajectory.

The rise of banditry and kidnapping highlights the government’s inability to uphold its security promises. Despite assurances from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2021 that the abduction of students would end, these crimes continue to plague the country. Even traditional authorities, such as the Emir of Anka, have pointedly stated that the responsibility for this security collapse rests solely with the federal administration.

A critical driver of this instability is the failure to educate Northern youth. With millions of children out of school, the region is essentially cultivating the next generation of criminals. This crisis stems from a historical lack of investment and the unchecked growth of a marginalized population. Addressing these systemic issues will likely require decades of effort.

Historically, the feudal structure of the North strictly separated the elite, known as the Megida, from the laboring class or Maigadi. Military intervention eventually disrupted this social hierarchy, demonstrating that power could be seized through force. Today, this realization has permeated the wider populace. Criminal gangs have adopted the tactics once used by political and military figures, now targeting the wealthy and elite who previously exploited them.

The transformation is illustrated by the chilling accounts of victims who find that their former employees have become their captors, embodying a total reversal of social roles. As the divide between the haves and have-nots deepens, the elite have become the primary targets of the very insecurity their policies helped foster.
