The Niger State Police Command has officially charged numerous drivers following the impounding of 82 vehicles. This action is part of a broader statewide initiative targeting unregistered cars, vehicles with defaced license plates, and those using prohibited tinted glass.
Initiated on June 20, 2026, the operation follows a mandate from the Inspector-General of Police aimed at reducing vehicle-related crime and enhancing security. According to SP Wasiu Abiodun, the police spokesperson, the effort focuses on vehicles that lack proper documentation or violate visibility laws.
While investigators released some drivers after verifying their details, those who violated the regulations were formally arraigned in court. The police emphasize that criminals frequently use obscured plates or tinted windows to facilitate kidnappings and robberies. Commissioner of Police Adamu Abdullahi Elleman clarified that the crackdown seeks to bolster regional safety rather than bother compliant citizens. He advised all residents to keep their vehicles properly registered and visible, as authorities intend to continue these checks throughout the state. The command has also asked the public to report any suspicious activities via their emergency contact lines.
