Gary Lightbody started Snow Patrol back in 1994 at the University of Dundee, originally naming the group Shrug and Polarbear. The band eventually hit a global milestone with their 2006 track, Chasing Cars. Lightbody describes the creation of the song during a casual session in a friend’s shed, noting that the pressure-free environment allowed for a breakthrough that would redefine their career.
With over two billion streams and recognition as a top radio song of the 21st century, Chasing Cars remains a defining moment for the band. The track’s title originated from advice Lightbody’s father gave about his romantic life, comparing him to a dog running after a vehicle it could never catch. The band plans to honor the song’s 20th anniversary with performances at the Royal Albert Hall.
The group has navigated significant transitions recently, including the departure of drummer Jonny Quinn and bassist Paul Wilson in 2023. Despite nearly disbanding, Lightbody, Nathan Connolly, and Jonny McDaid persisted, eventually working with producer Fraser T Smith to create their acclaimed 2024 album, The Forest is the Path. Lightbody, who has been sober since 2016, also celebrated a dream collaboration with Kylie Minogue on the new track These Alarms, which the artists perform in total unison.
