Ecclestone sets record as England stages Lord’s comeback

Sophie Ecclestone broke England’s all-time international wicket-taking record as the hosts restricted India to 285 on the opening day of the Lord’s Test.

Sophie Ecclestone became the most prolific wicket-taker in England’s history across all formats during the opening day of the first women’s Test against India at Lord’s. The spinner claimed 3-68, surpassing Katherine Sciver-Brunt’s career total of 335 international dismissals.

India reached 285 all out after captain Nat Sciver-Brunt opted to bowl first in intense heat. Smriti Mandhana anchored the visitors with 83, while Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma also reached half-centuries. However, England seized control by dismissing India’s final seven batters for just 95 runs.

England’s bowling attack initially appeared fatigued following their recent T20 World Cup campaign, but they improved significantly as the day progressed. Mady Villiers contributed 2-79 on her Test debut, including a pivotal delivery that bowled Harmanpreet. Issy Wong also claimed key wickets to curb India’s momentum.

In response, England finished on 21-1 after a challenging 11-over spell. Tammy Beaumont was dismissed for two in her final international appearance, leaving the contest balanced heading into the second day.
