Mikel Obi Calls for NFF Board Overhaul Following World Cup Absence

Former captain Mikel Obi insists the NFF leadership must resign after Nigeria failed to qualify for consecutive World Cups, a loss that carries both emotional and significant financial consequences.

Former Super Eagles skipper Mikel Obi has labeled Nigeria’s absence from the current World Cup a massive setback. During an appearance on the Obi One Podcast, the two-time tournament veteran expressed deep sympathy for Nigerians, stating that the nation is understandably heartbroken.

Mikel argued that the entire Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) leadership should step down. Since the team has missed back-to-back tournaments, he believes urgent systemic reform is necessary. Given that Nigeria is historically a dominant force in African football, he views this recurring failure as clear proof that the governing body is failing its mandate.

Prior to these consecutive misses, Nigeria had only missed the tournament once since its 1994 debut. Beyond the emotional toll on supporters, the country has forfeited significant financial gains. Reports indicate that qualification alone would have secured $12.5 million, funds that could have been redirected toward essential football infrastructure.
