Manchester City has officially acquired England international Niamh Charles from Women’s Super League rival Chelsea for a fee of £500,000. The 27-year-old left-back has committed to a three-year contract following a successful six-year tenure at Stamford Bridge, where she accumulated 173 appearances. During her time with Chelsea, Charles secured five WSL titles, four FA Cups, and three League Cups.
Charles, who began her professional career at Liverpool, expressed excitement about joining City’s project, citing their recent domestic success as a major draw. Her move to Manchester coincides with Chelsea recruiting Katie McCabe from Arsenal. For City, the defender brings substantial experience in both the WSL and the Women’s Champions League, serving as a replacement for Leila Ouahabi, who recently transferred to Chicago Stars FC. Charles will don the number 21 shirt.
Director of football Therese Sjogran highlighted the importance of adding such a high-caliber player to the squad. City remains focused on reinforcing their team after winning their first WSL title in ten years, having also recently signed forward Beth Mead from Arsenal and secured star striker Khadija Shaw to a new four-year contract. Charles is aiming for consistent playing time to ensure her selection for Sarina Wiegman’s England squad ahead of next year’s World Cup.
