Jorge Jesus named as new manager for Portugal

The Portuguese Football Federation has appointed veteran coach Jorge Jesus to lead the national team following Roberto Martinez’s departure after the 2026 World Cup.

Jorge Jesus has been named the new head coach of Portugal. This decision arrives only a few days after Roberto Martinez resigned from the position following the team’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese Football Federation issued a statement on Friday confirming the hiring. This move settles rumors regarding Martinez’s successor after Portugal lost 1-0 to Spain in the Round of 16. Martinez had stated his contract finished upon the team’s exit from the tournament.

At 71, Jesus brings extensive coaching experience to the national squad, having previously managed top clubs like Benfica and Sporting CP. He joins the team following a successful tenure with Al-Nassr, where he secured the 2025-26 Saudi Pro League championship.

Jesus previously worked with team captain Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, where the forward netted 29 goals in 33 games. While the 41-year-old Ronaldo noted the 2026 World Cup was his final appearance at the event, he has not clarified his future in international football. The federation aims for a quick transition as they pivot toward upcoming competitions under new leadership.
