The Abia State Police Command reported that officers from the Violent Crime Response Unit successfully detained three individuals during a suspected cult assembly in Ubakala, Umuahia South LGA. Acting on intelligence that approximately 50 people had convened for illicit activities on July 6, 2027, the unit mobilized quickly to the location.
Police spokesperson Maureen Chinaka confirmed the arrest of Obioma Nmeribe, Emmanuel Lekwechi, and Ikemefula ThankGod Amadi. Authorities confiscated a variety of items, including a Beretta pistol with eight rounds of ammunition, a homemade pistol, several cartridges, two black berets, a cutlass, and a digger.
In a separate operation, state police working with the joint security task force known as Operation Crush captured 31-year-old Bright Nnabugu from Ugwunagbo LGA. This arrest, which took place on July 6, 2026, resulted in the recovery of a single-barrel long gun and tools associated with wire cutting.
The Command confirmed that both cases are currently under active investigation. Once finished, the suspects will be formally charged in court. Abia State Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to their local police station or through official emergency channels.
