With only four months left in his term, U.S. President Joe Biden will address world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, September 24.

His speech comes amid ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as a potential new crisis in Lebanon.

This address follows the Pentagon’s announcement on Monday that it would deploy a small number of additional troops to the Middle East as a precautionary measure.

Biden’s presidency has been heavily influenced by foreign policy issues, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Hamas attack in southern Israel and the subsequent Israeli response in Gaza after the hostage crisis on October 7.

A senior U.S. administration official indicated that Biden’s speech will allow him to highlight what he views as significant accomplishments during his presidency.

It will also serve as a platform for him to urge the international community to support Ukraine and seek diplomatic solutions in the Middle East.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre informed reporters on the flight to New York that Biden will share his “vision for how the world can unite to tackle major challenges and uphold fundamental principles like the U.N. Charter.”

During their meeting in Washington on Thursday, Biden will discuss a new peace plan with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. A U.S. official noted that this plan is likely similar to previous proposals, emphasizing the need for increased weaponry and support for Ukraine’s efforts.

“We support Ukraine’s pursuit of a just, lasting and comprehensive peace to this war. And the president is committed to providing the Ukrainian military with the equipment they need to strengthen their position,” Jean-Pierre said.

Biden’s speech at the U.N. will be the highlight of his two-day visit to New York, which also features a climate address later on Tuesday and a meeting on Wednesday with Vietnam’s President To Lam.

The issues surrounding Ukraine, Russia, Gaza, Iran, and China are expected to continue presenting challenges for the next president, whether that individual is Biden’s vice president, Kamala Harris, a Democrat, or former President Donald Trump, a Republican.
