Federal Government to establish 112 as Nigeria’s universal emergency number

The Nigerian government is partnering with state governors and emergency agencies to standardize 112 as the official unified emergency telephone number for the country.

The Nigerian government has initiated plans to coordinate with state leaders and emergency agencies to standardize 112 as the primary emergency contact line across the nation. This strategy was confirmed in a public statement released on Thursday by Stanley Nkwocha, who serves as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications for the Office of the Vice President.

This initiative follows a discussion at the Presidential Villa involving Vice President Kashim Shettima and a team from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), headed by board chairman Chief Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe. The move aligns with a recent endorsement by the National Economic Council to integrate 112 as the unified contact point for all tiers of government.

During the session, Vice President Shettima directed the NCC to outline a comprehensive execution plan while working alongside the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to bolster nationwide response capabilities. He emphasized that the government is committed to securing necessary capital from both public and private sources to ensure the longevity of the project.

Chief Olorunnimbe noted that the NCC has already deployed 35 Emergency Communications Centres throughout the country. He urged state authorities, the police, and ambulance services to collaborate effectively to keep these facilities operational. The ultimate goal is to provide citizens with rapid, reliable assistance during critical situations.
