A devastating fire at the Huiteng Footwear facility in Jinjiang, Fujian province, has resulted in the deaths of at least 28 individuals. The blaze began around midday on Thursday in the city, which is globally recognized for producing one-fifth of the world’s athletic shoes. State media broadcasts captured footage of thick smoke billowing from the site, with victims visible on the roof.
Official reports indicate that nearly 240 workers were inside the building when the fire ignited. Rescuers evacuated over 200 people, though 26 of those previously reported missing were later confirmed dead, and two individuals died after reaching the hospital. More than 500 emergency responders were deployed to manage the crisis.
President Xi Jinping has demanded accountability for those responsible, urging officials to learn from recent industrial safety failures. Authorities have already frozen the company’s assets and detained staff associated with the factory owners. Preliminary findings suggest the fire originated on the ground floor, where large quantities of combustible materials were kept.
