CPPI urges National Assembly to reform political nomination fee regulations

A coalition of advocates has petitioned the National Assembly to regulate political nomination fees, seeking to enhance transparency and encourage wider electoral participation.

In Yenagoa, the Citizens Platform for Political Inclusion (CPPI) has formally requested that the National Assembly revise the Electoral Act regarding how political parties set nomination fees. This coalition, composed of policy advocates and governance stakeholders, aims to make the democratic process more accessible.

The group has sent pre-action notices to the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress. These legal notices serve to push for judicial clarity on current fee practices.

Signatories to the announcement include Osita Chidoka, High Chief Amagbe Denzil Kentebe, Iniruo Wills, Ken Lewis-Allagoa, Famous Obebi Famous, and Adebiyi Ajayi. They argue that legislative changes are necessary to create a structured framework for these fees, thereby increasing transparency.

The CPPI is requesting that the National Assembly’s committees on electoral matters hold public hearings. They want the Independent National Electoral Commission, political parties, and civil society groups to collaborate on potential reforms. The coalition, which is supported by the Athena Centre for Policy and Leadership and the Embassara Foundation, continues to push for stronger internal party democracy and a more inclusive electoral system.
