CONUA Backs NAMDA Regarding 2009 Agreement Strike Threat

CONUA has officially aligned itself with NAMDA, supporting the latter’s threat to strike if the Federal Government fails to resolve the 2009 university agreement negotiations.

The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has officially declared its support for the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA). This move comes after NAMDA urged the Federal Government to finalize negotiations regarding the 2009 agreement made with university staff. CONUA confirmed it backs NAMDA’s intent to strike if the government ignores these demands.

In a statement signed by National President Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, the union emphasized that every registered trade union possesses the legal right to seek industrial action under the Trade Union Act of 2005. CONUA noted that while a Joint Action Front is currently being established, it fully supports the push for a quick resolution and fair treatment for all university unions. They specifically requested that Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, the head of the Renegotiation Committee, finalize the talks immediately.

Dr. Sunmonu also voiced concerns regarding reports of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) attempting to intimidate CONUA members over the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA). He clarified that CONUA has already secured an understanding with the Yayale Committee regarding these payments. Consequently, the union warned that no member should be denied benefits based on their union affiliation and called on university leadership to ensure fair policy implementation. CONUA maintains its dedication to peaceful negotiation while asserting that its members’ rights remain a top priority.
