The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has imposed a £630,000 fine on the company behind the adult website Fapello. The penalty stems from the platform’s failure to implement mandatory age verification systems designed to prevent minors from accessing explicit content. Since July 2025, UK regulations have required adult platforms to utilize highly effective age assurance technology to confirm that users are at least 18 years old.
Ofcom initiated an investigation into the operator last November after noting a total absence of age checks. The regulator also highlighted the company’s refusal to respond to official requests for information, which resulted in an additional £30,000 of the total fine. George Lusty, Ofcom’s director of enforcement, emphasized that age verification is a non-negotiable legal requirement for protecting children from harmful material. While Fapello has subsequently blocked UK access, the regulator intends to monitor the site’s ongoing compliance.
This enforcement action is part of a broader crackdown on adult sites failing to meet safety standards. Recent history includes significant fines against other providers, such as YoungTek Solutions, though the regulator continues to face questions regarding the effectiveness of monetary penalties in forcing compliance. Meanwhile, Ofcom has launched a fresh investigation into Bit Hive, another pornographic content provider, to determine if its current age-checking procedures are sufficiently robust.
