Stokes jokes about dismissal amid ICC probe into retirement video

The ICC is investigating the England and Wales Cricket Board over the timing of Ben Stokes’ retirement announcement, which was broadcast during a live Test match. Stokes responded to the news of the probe with a humorous social media post.

The International Cricket Council has reached out to the England and Wales Cricket Board regarding the timing of Ben Stokes’ retirement announcement. The news of the 35-year-old stepping down from international cricket broke during the fourth day of the third Test match against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. Before play commenced that Sunday, Stokes addressed his teammates in a recorded message.

This footage was released to the public and media at 15:25 BST, just before the tea break. The ICC contends that broadcasting this video violates standards governing players’ and match officials’ areas. In a lighthearted reaction on X, Stokes shared the report with the caption: ‘Sack him.’

The governing body claims that the ECB violated specific rules prohibiting recording equipment in dressing rooms for broadcasting purposes. Furthermore, the ICC guidelines mandate that any such content must not include audio or be made public until a match has finished. Stokes later clarified that his management team and the ECB coordinated the release timing. At the time the news surfaced, he was actively bowling, even securing the wicket of Zak Foulkes shortly after the announcement. The Test match concluded the following day.

While neither the ECB nor the ICC has issued an official statement, the matter surfaced around the same time ECB chair Richard Thompson met with ICC head Jay Shah. With Stokes retiring, England faces the task of appointing a new Test captain before the Pakistan series in August. Vice-captain Harry Brook has expressed interest, though the board appears to be taking a cautious approach while evaluating the team’s leadership structure following recent performance challenges.
