Adapting to the Surface: Wimbledon’s Final Four Women

As Wimbledon reaches the semifinals, four players have overcome their history with grass courts to compete for their first title at the All England Club.

With Coco Gauff being the only remaining semifinalist to have previously secured a major title, this year’s Wimbledon tournament guarantees a new champion will be crowned on Saturday. The path to the semifinals for Gauff, Marta Kostyuk, Karolina Muchova, and Linda Noskova has been defined by overcoming historic struggles with the grass surface.

Gauff, who previously triumphed at the US Open and French Open, admitted she historically found grass challenging. Her technical adjustments, including refined footwork and improved service consistency under biomechanics coach Gavin MacMillan, have allowed her to trust her baseline game. Similarly, Muchova has moved past a difficult period of recurring injuries and first-round exits to find success at the All England Club. Her versatile playing style is now finally yielding results after she was once advised to retire due to physical strain.

Kostyuk entered the tournament following a successful clay-court season but held doubts about her ability to perform on grass. Reassurance from her coach, Sandra Zaniewska, played a vital role in boosting her confidence after a two-year drought on the surface. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Noskova has begun to shed her reputation for inconsistency. Following a title win in Berlin, the young Czech talent has managed to find comfort on the grass courts, positioning herself as a breakthrough contender.
