Tens of thousands of enthusiastic fans gathered in the capital city of Praia to welcome home the Cape Verde national football team following their remarkable debut at the World Cup. The squad, known as the Blue Sharks, arrived on Sunday after being eliminated in a hard-fought match against Argentina.
The airport grounds erupted into a lively celebration, with supporters dancing, drumming, and waving national flags to honor their team. Goalkeeper Josimar José Évora Dias, commonly known as Vozinha, expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support, noting that while the team hoped to advance further, the experience of sharing this moment with their fellow citizens was invaluable.
Despite being the tournament’s second-smallest nation and entering with a world ranking of 67, the Blue Sharks impressed the globe by drawing against European champions Spain and holding their own throughout the group stages. Their journey concluded in a close contest against Argentina, where they twice equalized before eventually losing due to an unfortunate late deflection.
Manager Pedro Leitão Brito, also called Bubista, praised his players for their resilience, emphasizing that the team proved a small nation could compete successfully against the world’s elite. The homecoming celebrations coincided with the country’s independence day, marking 51 years since the end of Portuguese colonial rule, giving the island nation even more reason to honor their history-making athletes.
